A. INTRODUCTION
^^^^^^^^^^^^
In Australia, there are many navaid installations where an NDB is
collocated with a DME, without a coupled VOR. FS5 does not directly
support the channel tuning of such DME facilities. In order to
accommodate these DMEs in the scenery, non-real world VOR frequencies
are assigned. These are shown with the label "DME only" in the
directories below, and in the Nav/Com (Navigation Radio) menu. When
tuned to an NDB which has a collocated DME, the special DME frequency
is also noted in the Nav/Com (ADF) menu.
There are several VORs without DME. These are labelled as "VOR only".
All VORs coupled with DME are labelled "VOR+DME".
When approaching an airport supported only by a DME and NDB, it is
more realistic to fly with the ADF active, and with NAV2 tuned to the
special DME frequency. This gives the DME2 distance readout while
removing the NAV2 OBI from use. In fact, it wouldn't be unrealistic
to always configer your nav instruments this way when flying in
Australia.
Several Australian airports offer both Australian and International
DME capability. (Australian DME is an uniquely Australian system and
more accurate than the International DME system.) In these cases,
only one DME is rendered in the scenery. One of the two real world
DMEs is usually coupled with a VOR. When any real world DME is
coupled with a VOR, the *simulated* DME is always located at the VOR
position.
Ranges for NDBs are set as specified in ERSA (Enroute Supplement
Australia) for overland and daytime, and are given in the directories
below. Ranges for VORs and DMEs are set at 120 NM. FS5 can read DME
ranges up to 98.9 NM. If the DME indicates a range from 99.0 to 99.9
(the max readout), the station is more distant than shown, but the
localiser is available. So please be advised of this when navigating.
If the DME shows "....", the station is totally out of range or the
station is "VOR only".
All ILS distance readouts are measured from the touchdown point.
You need to remember this when using real world instrument approach
"plates". All ILS ranges have been set at 60 NM, minimum.
In the directories below, latitude is south and longitude is east.
In the Airport Directory, the cited position is the
"Aerodrome Reference Point" published in CAA documents.
In Australia, airport elevations are expressed in feet and runway
lengths are expressed in meters.

In FS5 we are presently limited to the parameters we may
specify in setting up Aerodrome Beacons (ABN). In Australia most ABNs
are Alternating or Flashing White/Green 8 or 6 seconds. In FS5 the
closest we can presently get is Flashing White/Green 5 Sec.
This is only a minor divergence from reality and is mentioned here
simply as an explanation why our settings above will be different
from those you will find in the ERSA.
Note *2.
Due to FS5 not supporting separate DMEs, VOR/DME combination
navaids have been set up in their stead, ( as per explanations
given above ). Separate DMEs normally use a one or two digit
frequency value, as distinct from a VOR/DME combination navaid
which have a five digit value. In order that you can enter the DME
frequency directly from a chart etc we have
used the following frequency conversion method. Adjust your VOR
frequency so that the 3rd and 4th digits ( ie the digits each
side of the decimal ) read as the correct value for the DME.
Eg. DME 23 becomes VOR 112.30
DME 5 becomes VOR 110.50
DME 17 becomes VOR 111.70
This method has not yet produced any frequency conflicts and
avoids the need to look up these notes to find an arbitrary
appointed replacement frequency.
Note *3.
In FS5a, glideslopes ( vertical position indicator ) on ILSs
most often don't work in the Southern hemisphere. This seems to
be a bug in the FS5 program itself. As at the date of this
production Microsoft don't appear to have issued a fix for
the problem. However the localiser ( ILS horozontal position
indicator ) on the ILSs function correctly and are still
worthwhile using.
Note *4.
In Flight Sim. 5x, there are limitations on elevation differences
between geographically close objects. Conflicts due to this
limitation demand a solution which will be a compromise on reality.
Such a case is the elevation difference between Adelaide/Parafield
(PAF) and the nearby Edinburgh (PED) Airports. PAF, the civilian
and most used of the two airports, has an elevation of 57 feet and
(PED) the military airport an elevation of 677 feet. Due to their
close proxcimitry to one another, software limitations require that
they need to share a common elevation in FS5. Given that (PAF) at
57 feet is cilvilian and the one that most ordinary pilots will
use day-to-day, both airports in this scenery have been given
57 feet elevation.
Note *5.
In the real world, some ATIS are available only on NDB or VOR
frequencies. Unfortunately FS5a does
not support such ATIS arrangements. Rather than not represent
these ATISs we have used non-real-world frequencies.
